We started the theme OUR SEA by asking the children what do they want to learn about our Adriatic Sea. Most of them wanted to know what kind of animals live there, why is the sea salty and how can we all help to protect it. All those questions were put on a list so children can read them in the research center where they had the opportunity to explore and research through experiments. Experiment about water density using salt was their favourite experiment because it was fun watching objects float in the salt water while other objects sank in the clear water.
One of the animals that we came across while reading encyclopedias was our famous monk seal Adriana (the animal is on the list of endangered species in Croatia). There hasn't been any sights of her lately so the children wanted to know more about her and what happened to her.
We contacted one of the non-governmental organization "BIOM" dedicated to nature conservation, promotion and popularisation. One of their biologist prepared an online presentation over Zoom platform for our group and children were then able to ask all the question that were on their mind through the presentation.
After the presentation, children made posters about ADRIANA, made a cave MEDVIDINA ŠPILJA where the animal has a habitat in the southern part of the sea and they also made a storybook called "Adriana, diver and the sea urchin".
One of the boys in our group was concerned about how to help all the animals in the Adriatic Sea. He then came up with the idea of making a machine that will clear all the plastic and pollution in the sea.
his friends helped him draw a sketch of how the machine would look like and then after it was done we started collecting all the materials the children needed to build the machine. They called it "SEA CLEANER ROBERT" and after 3 weeks the machine was built.
